FOTOGRAFEN Amsterdam

Traditional photography is not dead. Far from it. While mobile phones have become the standard for photography in the digital era, there is still a place for good old fashion single-purpose machines that take pictures. FOTOGRAFEN Amsterdam is a small project that makes merch for those adherents—both film and pixel as FOTOGRAFEN simply translates to “PHOTOGRAPHERS.”

The graphic takes advantage of some long-standing visual equity in Amsterdam. It uses the famous “XXX” Amsterdam flag, but with a simple, 35mm film sprocket hole update.

Merch will have a decidedly Dutch angle to it. With phrasing and humor that reflects the low-lands in a way no other nation can.

The original Amsterdam flag.

The flag of Amsterdam is based on the city’s coat of arms. It features a red shield with a black band and three silver St. Andrew’s crosses, with the motto of Amsterdam underneath (Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig, meaning "Valiant, Steadfast, Compassionate").
