Monday Night Inquisition

A pub quiz for smart drunk people.

When my wife and I moved to the newly redeveloped Arts District in downtown Los Angeles in 2008, we lived in a loft building on far edge of this new community. Regularly scheduled local events for residents to meet up and hang out were rare; so my wife and I started a trivia night at the local English pub across from our building. Since the bar had a Tower of London “dungeon” theme and Monday nights were notoriously slow, we dubbed it Monday Night Inquisition.

The owners wanted to draw people in and a pub quiz seemed like an incredibly fun, obvious solution. To promote the weekly quiz night, I created these posters to place all over the Arts District and on social media. We chose to embrace the overlapping Venn Diagram circles of competitive intellectuals and drunkards.

It worked. Not only did sales increase for the bar on the formerly dead Monday nights, but Monday Night Inquisition won Downtown News’ “Best Game Night.” On our best night, we actually turned people away at the door as we’d reached fire code capacity. Not a trivial statistic.
